First Graders Succeed with Phonics at Liberty Elementary in Riverside, CA
Please take a moment to read the excerpt of a letter written by a Project Read® Program teacher and trainer regarding the success of a group of first graders in Riverside, CA, whose reading scores improved tremendously over a six week period using the Project Read® Curriculum. Judy wrote:
"When we began, none of these students could consistently blend or segment two sounds. They could not identify the first, middle, or end sound of a word. They did not understand how letters or punctuation worked and couldn't consistentlyrespond to questions such as, "What letter comes before'n' on your alphabet strip." All exhibited b/d reversals and did not monitor their reading. They did not attend to the guide lines on paper and letter formation was poor.
The students received daily intervention for 6 weeks for a total of 22 hours. Improvement in all areas is evident. Every student can consistently blend, segment, and identify the the location of cvc words. Most sttend to punctuation, expecially the ocmma and exclamation mark. They corerct each other's letter formation, and they love to read and spell!
In addition to this, many of their classmates with poor fluency were provided approximately 10 extra minutes of fluency practice using the Bonnie Kline stories. These two interventions resulted in strong reading improvement. Based on fluency measures, this school's first gread team moved from 26th of 30 elementary schools to 13th of 30 schools!"

New Spelling Lessons and Activities
Language Circle Enterprises is excited to announce another new addition to our Phonics curriculum!
The spelling lessons in this program are developed from the Language Circle®/Project Read® Phonics Guide and Lesson Plans Volumes 1, 2, and 3. Each booklet is designed for individual student use. The lessons introduce a spelling list and sentence for mastery. The tiger icon points out to specific features in that lesson. Each lesson contains various strategies and activites that lead to spelling and vocabulary mastery. the strategies and activities include word meaning, word building, word search, word scramble, alphabetizing, sentence dictation, finger spelling, spelling generalizations, crossword puzzles, synonyms, antonyms, and filling in vocabulary for sentence and story completion. At the end of each lesson there is a spelling test. The Teacher's Key includes a grading rubric, instructional materials, and a Spelling Calculator Chart. The Spelling Calculator includes all the spelling generalizations taught in the Language Circle®/Project Read® Phonics program.
